Supporting Student Success: September 2015

Dear Friend,

Welcome Back!! The beginning of the academic year is always exciting. Walking your child to kindergarten on the first day of school or wishing your senior good luck on his or her last AUSD year is exciting and memorable.

We at the Alameda Education Foundation wish the best for all our Alameda students. Our mission to support student success will continue throughout the school year. There are AEF programs that can assist students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Our programs will enhance student development in many ways. Programs have started, Equipped 4 Success has impacted students with school supplies and classroom adoptions and middle school volleyball are around the corner. Thanks to the generosity of our community, approximately 1,000 low-income Alameda students are beginning the school year “Equipped 4 Success”! AEF successfully donated new backpacks and school supplies to low-income students served by our Equipped 4 Success partner agencies including:

  • Alameda Unified School District’s McKinney-Vento program (serving homeless families and Woodstock Child Development Center (serving primarily low-income students)
  • Alameda Point Collaborative (serving formerly homeless families)
  • Alameda Family Services’ Head Start (serving low-income pre-schoolers) and Dream Catchers (serving homeless teens) programs
  • Alameda Boys & Girls Club
  • Girls Inc. of the Island City

Equipped 4 Success was truly a grassroots effort this year. We have so many to thank – please click here for a partial list of those who made this drive successful! A special thank you to our sponsors who helped underwrite the costs of this program: Alameda South Shore Center, Alameda Rotary Club and Michaan’s Auctions.

Thank you to SPIN! Pizza! On August 22nd, SPIN! Neopolitan Pizza at Alameda Landing held a soft sale opening benefitting AEF. Hundreds of people enjoyed fantastic pizza (and gelato!) and owners JP and Christine Gage donated 100% of sales to AEF.

Adopt A Classroom: AEF is now accepting Adopt A Classroom donations. We hope to beat last year’s record of 189 adoptions! Each $500 donation goes directly to a classroom teacher who uses the funds to support the unique needs of his/her classroom. Thanks to our generous sponsors, AEF continues to be able to give 100% of each donation to the classroom teacher with no additional fees tacked on. Adopt A Classroom is made possible this year by our major sponsor, Alameda Rotary Club. Other sponsors include: Alameda Point Partners, Catellus, Tim Lewis Communities, and Wellguard Insurance Solutions.

Rotarian Day at the Raiders! Discounted tickets for the Dec. 6th Raiders vs. Kansas City Chiefs are for sale on the Alameda Rotary Club’s website. Tickets are prime lower level sideline seats and are only $75, a $10 discount from the regular price. Ticket purchases also include an exclusive tailgate party and stocking stuffers from the Raiders. Purchase your tickets today to guarantee group seating! All proceeds benefit AEF’s Adopt A Classroom program.

Enrichment Class Registration Begins Thursday! We are again offering dozens of after school enrichment classes at several Alameda elementary and middle schools. Registration begins at 9:30 AM on Thursday, Sept. 3rd. Be sure to register early as many fill up quickly. Enrichment class descriptions may be found on our website. To register, click here.

Power Up For Learning: Sign up now and we get an extra $50! Sign up to add a small amount to your monthly power bill and support technology education for Alameda students. Now through Nov. 30th, Alameda Municipal Power will donate $50 for every new sign up! Please click here for more information and to join.

Music lovers needed! On October 23rd, AEF will be sponsoring the Oakland East Bay Symphony’s Young People’s Concert. We expect close to 3,000 Alameda public school students to attend. We are actively seeking sponsors to help underwrite the costs of this concert. Sponsorships offer your company or organization generous marketing benefits and help bring the magic of music to Alameda students. Please contact Executive Director Vicki Sedlack at 510-337-7189 for more information.

Thank you to all you do to help us “Support Student Success!”

Sincerely,
Bill Sonneman
