Radio station KNBR and the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame together raised more than $52,000 for AUSD sports in March.

The donation includes a $30,000 grant from BASHF, as well as $20,000 from Dontelle Willis, who went to Encinal High School. A number of community members donated the rest of the money.

The radio station got involved when staff members heard that the Board of Education had cut $200,000 from high school sports in AUSD, in an attempt to make up for $4.5 million in revenues lost under the governor’s proposed state budget.

Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame President Thomas Martz and KNBR VP/General Manager Tony Salvadore commented, “The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame has been helping kids play sports since its origin in 1980, donating over $4 million to youth sports programs…and we’re pleased to be able to join our partner KNBR in this effort. There’s never been a more critical time to support school sports than now!”
