Both Encinal High School and Alameda High School rank in the top 4 percent of public high schools nationally, according to Newsweek’s annual “American’s Best High Schools” survey.Encinal is ranked at 1139 – putting it in the top 4 percent of high schools across the country. Alameda High School was ranked at 504, The rating puts the school in the top 2 percent of all schools nationwide. The index, which looks at 1300 public high schools (the top 5 percent in the country), ranks them according to the number of AP exams administered, divided by the total number of seniors. A score of 1.0 (or one test given per senior) is considered excellent. The index also incorporates other factors, including the number of free and reduced lunches served and the College Board’s equity and excellence rating for high schools. The index doesn’t use the AP pass rate as a criteria, because some schools exclude students who are not likely to pass.
