Soroptimists Donate $8500.00
In a gesture of great generosity, Soroptimists International of Alameda have donated $8500.00 to the Alameda Education Foundation.
Founded in 1921, Soroptimists International is a worldwide organization for women in management and profession. Through service projects around the world, the Soroptimists work to advance human rights and the status of women.
Due to declining enrollment, the Soroptimist Club of Alameda will be closing its doors this summer. But the chapter has decided to bestow its remaining funds on AEF. “Over the years, we’ve donated to a number of organizations in Alameda, including Girls, Inc. and Meals on Wheels,” explains Elizabeth Koopen, the president of the Alameda Chapter. “But when we saw the “Step Up and Donate” signs around town this spring, we realized the schools were in very dire need. So we decided the most important thing was to invest in our future.”
The funds will be directed to the foundation’s Visual & Performing Arts and Technology Programs.
Women who are interested in joining the Soroptimists can still join the Oakland Chapter, Koopen noted.
AEF would like to thank the Soroptimists for their very gracious donation to AEF, our local schools, and the Alameda community.
