July 4, 2008

July 4, 2008 A float built and shared with AEF won the Chipman Cougar Drum Corps a 2nd prize in the School Band category at the Alameda Mayor’s 4th of July Parade Day today, after inspiring cheers and whoops of appreciation from spectators all along the parade route.june-2008-014.jpg

The 48-foot float — decorated with both garbage cans from the foundation’s Step Up campaign and banners from the Cougars — held the entire drum corps, as well AEF staff and supporters.

“We wanted to share the float with the drum corps for a couple of reasons,” explains Brooke Briggance, executive director of AEF. “First, the corps is exactly the kind of program we as a foundation support in this district. Second, it’s more ‘green’ to split a float with another group than it is to have two flatbeds polluting the air. And third, we knew we’d have a blast sharing the parade with these fantastic young musicians!”

AEF is currently helping the drum corps raise money for a new bus, as the their old bus is too small to hold all the drummers and their equipment.
