Winter/Spring 2012 Class Descriptions
Karate I , II, and III

True to its meaning “to learn from all things,” Wado Ki Kai Karate uses traditional and contemporary training styles including Katas (forms), kicking techniques, flexibility, tumbling and practical self-defense skills.  Focusing on technique rather than strength or size, students will improve self-esteem through the disciplines of practice, concentration, proper breathing and goal setting.  A demonstration with belt tests and/or awards will be held for students and their families each session. .

Karate I: Beginner Students: White & Stripe Belts.Karate II: Yellow-black stripe and orange belt students. Karate III: Green belt students and higher. Uniforms can be purchased through Sensei Marla Lee, gardensbymarla@gmail.com

WE MUST PROVIDE A VOLUNTEER ESCORT FOR ANY CLASS THAT HAS A CHILD ENROLLED IN ONSITE AFTERCARE.

A credit for a future class will be given to the volunteer who escorts children to/from onsite aftercare:

For a 4-6 week class,  $25 class credit

For a 7-10 week class  $40 class credit

For an 11-24 week class, $60 class credit

QuickStart Tennis Gr. K and Gr.1-5

Quick Start Tennis (QST) concept, a games-based approach that introduces the game through play. QST features low-compression balls, junior racquets and miniature nets. 45 min classes *Monday 4/9 class to be held @ Earhart K playground *Remaining Mondays children will be walked from K playground to HBC 10& Under tennis courts (Ct. 19) by tennis staff member. *Parents will pick up at conclusion of class at Court 19. Parents are welcome to watch during classes.

Introduction to Chess with The Berkeley Chess School

Chess is fun and can be learned quickly and easily. Studies have found that chess helps

improve test results in reading, science, and math, and produces growth in critical cognitive

skills. Beyond academia, chess influences social behavior including self esteem, respect for

others, patience, and good manners. And did we mention: it’s FUN!! The Berkeley Chess School is a nonprofit organization offering chess instruction from kindergarten through high school for 29 years.

Natural and Green Art Class

Join me for this fun filled eco friendly class. Kids will make crafts inspired by nature.  Painted Palm fronds, Zen Gardens, CD Wind chimes, T-Shirt Art, & much more. This class is designed to recycle everyday items or use nature to make beautiful pieces of art.

One on One Soccer Gr. 1-5

This program provides experienced instructors who bring valuable knowledge and youthful enthusiasm to the game.  Throughout the Spring One on One will conduct a one hour clinic, once a week, for you and your friends. These clinics will help you become a better player through drills, contests, and game competition.

Mad Science (Gr 1 – 5): Secret Agent Lab

James Bond? MacGyver? Austin Powers?!? Do you think you have what it takes to discover “who done it”? If so, this after-school program is for you! From secret communications and detective crime science to cool chemistry and spy science. Each session we sleuth out the answer to many of life’s mysteries!

PLAY-WELL TEKnologies “Engineering Fundamentals with Legos” Gr. 1-5

Students take on real-life engineering challenges that explore concepts in physics, architecture, mechanical and structural engineering with over 100,000 pieces of LEGO® material. From racecars to Battletracks, this is a hands-on and minds-on camp suitable for LEGO novices to “maniacs.” Designed by engineers, the curriculum challenges both new and returning students to reach the next level of engineering comprehension, all while having fun. Projects will be customized for returning students.

Hip Hop/Liquid Dance Gr. 1-5

A combination of liquid dance, and hip hop, this class will get your muscle’s working while you are having fun. We learn a choreographed routine over a course of a few weeks, adding a

little more each week. We will teach techniques like, muscle isolation, liquid hands, and footwork. Teaches rhythm, and coordination, develops strength, flexibility, and confidence.

Bring water and wear comfortable clothes. No jeans please.

Acting & Physical Theatre Gr. 2-5

In this 10‐week session, there will be a concentration on voice/body relationship through Improvisation skills, Physical Theatre skills and Vocal technique. Students will work on monologues that they can use for future auditions for ACMT or Virago Theatre Company productions. Monologue work will include learning to take direction, learning stage directions, taking risks, and developing good audition skills. Students will find comfort and confidence onstage. The session will end with a showcase of memorized monologues demonstration of Improv games.

Jewelry Designers Gr. 1-5

Create customized, stylish jewelry ready for you and your friends to wear!  Become your own jewelry designer, where you can choose from a huge selection of hot colors, textures, and unique beads to make one-of-a kind pieces.  Our classes are designed not only to be fun, but to let you in on some of the most popular jewelry making techniques, such as wire work, beading, felting, finger knitting, and stamping and dapping.

One on One Basketball Gr. 1-5

One on One Basketball, Inc. focuses on instilling basic fundamentals of the game in aspiring players through Skills Classes.  These clinics will help players become better basketball players through drills, contests, and game competition

Glee Club Gr. 3-5

Mr D’s Music Club is a music lovin’, singin’, movin’, shakin’, songwriting, recording, designing, creative, multi dimensional experience for Boys and for Girls of all ages and abilities.
