Innovation in our Schools

march-innovation-in-schoolsAt Henry Haight Elementary School, third graders have been writing African poetry and will be making windmills (with the help of Alameda Municipal Power) based on the book, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, to support global learning and environmental stewardship.

At Franklin Elementary, parents Jill and Taggart Gorman continue their work with the Ability Awareness Program that nurtures respect for individual difference and celebrates the many talents of their children.

A walk down the hallways at Maya Lin Elementary is like a walk through an art gallery, with Louise Nevelson inspired student sculptures gracing the walls alongside student work influenced by Cubist painters, African Kente cloth weavers and Asian painters, thanks to the school’s partnership with the Museum of Children’s Art.

Over at Alameda High, students are receiving real world experience as athletic trainers for many of their school sports teams, thanks to the Sports Medicine innovative program.

These programs and more will be recognized at the Alameda Education Foundation’s annual Salute to Education event on Friday, April 15 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm at Rhythmix Cultural Works, 2513 Blanding Ave., Alameda.

All of these programs enrich the lives of our students and make an impact,” explained AEF board president, Bill Sonneman. Each of Alameda’s 20 public schools will have an innovative program and volunteer honored at the event. The programs and volunteers will be featured on photo-quality posters at the venue as well as in keepsake programs. In addition, honorees will be recognized during the event and presented with a token of appreciation for their work.

The event is an opportunity for educators, parents, artists, business people and office holders to network and learn more about the work being done in Alameda schools. A true partnership between town and gown, Salute to Education features hors d’oeuvres from Alameda restaurants, fine wine from Connoisseurs’ Guide to California Wine and locally made craft beer. Tickets are $30 in advance online.

The innovation in our schools is inspiring and often not recognized outside of the particular school,” said AEF executive director Vicki Sedlack. “Our students are learning to be global citizens, learning to respect those with differences, gaining valuable job experiences and so much more, all because of the dedicated staff and volunteers who work so hard on behalf of our students.”
