WE MUST PROVIDE A VOLUNTEER ESCORT FOR ANY CLASS THAT HAS A CHILD ENROLLED IN ONSITE AFTERCARE.

A credit for a future class will be given to the volunteer who escorts children to/from onsite aftercare:

For a 4-6 week class, $25 class credit, For a 7-10 week class, $40 class credit, For an 11-24 week class, $60 class credit

ART WITH JAYING WANGBack by popular demand, JaYing Wang returns to teach her Arts and Crafts class. Typically, there are 4 to 6 complete new projects.  Students will work with many different media ranging from watercolors, acrylic paints, glass mosaics, wire and fabric.  Finished creations are beautiful and worthy of display.  JaYing Wang is an accomplished mosaic artist and has taught art to children for over 11 years. HAWAIIAN ISLAND DANCEEnjoy the rhythm and beat of island music as we learn about Hawaiian culture through song, language, and basic hula steps.  We will also have fun dressing up in hula costumes.  By the end of the 8 sessions, students will be ready to sway for families and friends with a performance-ready dance routine. JAPANESE TAIKO DRUMMINGBorn and raised in Tokyo, Japan, Hiroyuki “Jimi” Nakagawa started playing drums when he was in high school and performed with local bands in Japan and San Francisco. Jimi founded OH-IN TAIKO in Alameda. Students will learn to use wood bachi sticks to hit big drum and make great sound and rhythm with your whole body. It helps to build your concentration as well. BERKELEY CHESS“Chess is fun and can be learned quickly and easily.  Studies have found that chess helps improve test results in reading, science, and math, and produces growth in critical cognitive skills.  Beyond academia, chess influences social behavior including self esteem, respect for others, patience, and good manners.  Classes are one hour in length, with 20 minutes of instruction and 40 minutes of play.  http://www.berkeleychessschool.org/pages/show/1 HULA HOOP – “A NEW SPIN ON FITNESS”This high energy hula hoop classes is about fun, fitness and self expression.  This reemerging art form mixes dance, play, coordination skills, and movement.  The students will be having fun while building core strength and learning hoop skills as they spin and dance with custom made hoops.  This class will start with basic techniques and will move to more intermediate moves both on and off the body. Specialty tricks are also taught such as “The Vortex”, “Atomic Twirls” and “Helicopter Spin”. DISCOVER THE WORLD’S CULTURE THRU ARTStudents will be introduced to a different place in the world in each session.  A traditional or acclaimed form of art from that geographical region will then be displayed for the class, and they will then be supplied with the techniques and tools to create their own version of this particular art form.  Basic lines and colors thru Keith Haring build the foundation as students are introduced to traditional Iranian painting, Cambodian apsaras (fairies/nymphs), Egyptian pyramids, adorned with ancient hieroglyphs, Vietnamese water puppetry.   And the list goes on… KIDS CARPENTRYKids’ Carpentry teaches students the safe and proper use of hand woodworking tools. Students select from a wide range of projects choices supplied by the teacher such as boats, trucks, bird feeders, clocks, guitars, etc. Returning students often design and build their own projects.

KARATE WITH ANTHONY CORPUZWado Ki Kai Karate uses traditional and contemporary training styles.  Primarily Okinawa-Japanese based Karate.  It incorporates traditional Kata’s (forms), Korean Kicking techniques from Tae Kwon Do, flexibility and tumbling as in gymnastics and practical Self-Defense skills.  Focusing on techniques rather than strength or size.  Students will improve self-esteem through the disciplines of practice, concentration, proper breathing and goal setting.  Students will get the opportunity to test for their next rank and color belt at the end of each session.

MR. D’S MUSIC AND GLEE CLUB It’s a music lovin’, singing, moving, shaking, songwriting, recording, producing, designing, spectacular creative multi dimensional music program for Boys and for Girls of all ages and abilities.  This class is all about using the voice to build a foundation for a lifelong love of music.  Class will cover basic ear training and rhythm concepts along with vocal exercises as well as basic songwriting. Students will also learn about recording, using AVID Pro Tools, and explore the technology that goes into recording our own CD.  Stephen Duffy is an award winning singer songwriter and producer. He has been working in and around Bay Area schools for almost 15 years. He is a vocal music teacher and owns Splendid Productions, a mobile music recording business in Oakland. He is also parent of 3 children. http://www.splendidsound.com/ NATIVE BIRDS CONNECTIONYou will learn how to identify the birds in your neighborhood, keep a field journal, how to use binoculars, and a spotting scope. Have you ever wanted to see a raptor up close?  On a few of the session dates, a wild non-releasable raptor (i.e.  a hawk, a falcon or an owl) will be brought in for you to study up close! Along the way, we will have craft projects that help you learn about the environment so we tread lightly to help all of us have a better future. “SKILLY” CIRCUS ARTSExplore the diverse skills and challenges of the circus. Try your hands at juggling using scarves, bean bags, spinning plates, diabolos and more.  Turn, twist, roll and stretch through the fundamentals of circus acrobatics. Test your balance with stilts, rola-bola and partner acrobatics.   Bang your funny-bone exploring slapstick and clown theater. Students will use new skills to create their own circus show at the end of the session.  Be ready to be challenged and have fun! No experience necessary. Circus learning provides opportunities for children of all abilities to gain confidence by way of learning new and exciting activities that foster self-esteem, body-awareness, teamwork and cooperation without the pressures of competition often found in traditional sports.  http://www.skillycircus.com/
MANDARIN United Education was founded in 2004. It offers various practical and effective Chinese courses for children, youth and adults. United Youth Enrichment School, UYES, is a division of United Education for K-12 students. Keeping in mind that students are from English speaking backgrounds, we have created our own textbooks, the My Chinese series, for K-12 students. The textbook series relates to students’ everyday lives, piquing their interest. A unique Visual Learning Method for Chinese teaching promotes a very lively teaching environment with very interactive activities that include speaking, singing and games. MAD SCIENCE “Secret Agent Lab”Calling all agents, calling all agents! Step into the shoes of a detective, of a spy, of a sleuth to uncover the science involved in these professions. Students will create, collect, and analyze evidence and discover what skills are necessary as a crime scene lab technician. From edible messages and decoding clues, students will have the opportunity to check out the skills that spies have in this hands-on journey into the world of espionage. Test your skills and learn how the pros do it through careful observation and techniques and build your own collection of Secret Agent tools by collecting all the take homes.

MAD SCIENCE “Crazy Chemworks”

Use your hands as a real Mad Scientist in this whirlwind class on how a lab works! Students will learn to recognize chemical reactions and mix up a few reactive ingredients for some sensational results. We will explore the pH extremes with our Reaction Tubes in what is sure-to-be a popping experience! Create slime using the Mad Science recipe, and then enter the Slime Olympics to test your polymers. Probe the properties of light and explore some unusual applications of glow-in-the-dark technology! We will melt metal in boiling water and freeze water with just a breath of dry ice! www.madscience.org
USTA QUICKSTART TENNIS PROGRAM“Quickstart” tennis is an exciting way to learn tennis.  The court, equipment and court dimensions are adapted for children under 10.  Even the tennis balls are special!

A parent will be needed on court to assist with the program. If you volunteer & are accepted, your child’s place will be guaranteed. You will be required to attend every week of the session and will receive a $25 credit toward a future class of your choice.

AEF Cancellation/Refund policy:

o     If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, participants will receive their full tuition refund.

o     Cancellations initiated by the participant, must be requested a minimum of 5 business days prior to the start of the class.  Credit for the cancelled class will be applied to your AEF account less a $15.00 processing fee.  This request must be made in writing to your school site enrichment coordinator.

o     No refunds are allowed after the first day of class.
