Winter/Spring 2012 Class Descriptions
Jewelry Design  

Our classes are designed not only to be fun, but to let you in on some of the most popular jewelry making techniques, such as wire work, beading, felting, fingerknitting, and stamping and dapping.  We use only the highest quality findings, fresh water pearls, and Czech glass beads to create one piece of new jewelry per class. 

Please note: Materials fee of $35 to be paid to the teacher.

Carpentry 

Students discover the fun of working with wood; learning safe & proper use of hand tools. They discover the excitement of making useful & playful items. We begin by teaching simple skills such as using a hammer to drive nails: each student successfully builds an item such as a piece of furniture for a stuffed toy, a footstool or bird feeder.

Acting and Physical Theater 

There will be a concentration on voice/body relationship through Improvisation skills, Physical Theatre skills & Vocal technique.  Students will work on monologues that they can use for future auditions for ACMT or Virago Theatre Company productions. Monologue work will include learning to take direction, learning stage directions, taking risks, and developing good audition skills. A showcase will be held during the last class.

Tennis 

“Quickstart” tennis www.10andundertennis.com is an exciting way to learn tennis.  The court, equipment and court dimensions are adapted for children under 10.  Even the tennis balls are special!  A parent will be needed on court to assist with the program. If you volunteer & are accepted, your child’s place will be guaranteed. You will receive a $25 stipend for your help on the court. Please Note: 4th & 5th grade students will have a separate instructor.

Capoeira 

Join in the FUN & learn the Brazilian art form of Capoeira; It offers discipline, confidence, acrobatics, music, singing, dance, fun games & more all in just one class! Instr. Sumido has been teaching Capoeira in Alameda schools since 2005.  Students from the AEF program have even progressed to earn their Capoeira Cordão (belt).

Mad Science: Crazy Chemistry 

Use your hands as a real Mad Scientist in this whirlwind class on how a lab works! Learn to recognize chemical reactions and mix up reactive ingredients for some sensational results. Explore the pH extremes with our Reaction Tubes – a popping experience! Create slime, and enter the Slime Olympics to test your polymers. Probe the properties of light and explore some unusual applications of glow-in-the-dark technology! Melt metal in boiling water and freeze water with just a breath of dry ice!

Spanish 

Hola estudiantes!

Come one, come all this fall,and learn your numbers, the alphabet, the seasons, and greetings, and more in Spanish!

ADVANCED Students learn historical facts about Spain, like who was El Cid, and why are the windmills of La Mancha, so famous! So, don’t be square; be there!

Chorus 

OYC is a professional, award-winning music education program. Singers have fun learning songs from a variety of cultures and build music skills including pitch, dynamics and music theory. “Miracle Chorus” members from Alameda may perform at community events and OYC concerts.  OYC alumni include LaToya London (American Idol Season 3)

Mandarin Chinese 

Back by popular demand – Mandarin language in modules based on topics, eg, self, family, my school, my community, the world. Emphasis on speaking and listening skills and conversational Mandarin.  Learn about the Chinese culture and do some written work.  All teachers are from mainland China and they have developed their own textbook geared toward US students.

Birds of Alameda 

Learn about birds and how to identify them especially those found right here in Alameda. Bird watch using spotting scopes and binoculars. Interact with live, non-releasable wild birds like the Barn Owl, and create field journals. For those kids who have taken this class before, there will be new, exciting birds and activities. A wonderful environmental class to enjoy and build bird watching skills! More info: www.nativebirds.org.

Legos – Engineering FUNdamentals 

Have your child become a Play-Well Engineer!  Students explore concepts in physics, architecture, mechanical and structural engineering, from Gear Cars to Battletracks.  The engineer-designed curriculum challenges new and returning students to reach higher levels of engineering comprehension while having fun.  Grades 1-5.

Legos – Pre-Engineering  

Have your child become a Play-Well Engineer!  Build cities, bridges, motorized cars and planes.  With access to over 100,000 pieces of LEGO, students build what they have only dreamed of with the support of an experienced Play-Well Engineering instructor.

Hula Hoop TechniquesThis high energy hula hoop classes is about fun, fitness and self expression. This reemerging artform mixes dance, play, coordination skills, movement and is designed to support physical fitness and encourage self discovery. The students will be having fun while building core strength, and learning hoop skills as they spin and dance with custom made hoops.

Art Yowza: Crazy Funny 3-D ArtLet’s make wild inventions, silly sculpture and fun paintings!   All new projects!  Use your imagination to make crazy, funny and sweet 3-D things with ART YOWZA. We’ll create with fluffy, soft, and rock solid materials to make goofy or real-looking people, animals and wild things. Boldly express yourself! The emphasis is on creativity and fun. • Advanced art tricks for older students.

WE MUST PROVIDE A VOLUNTEER ESCORT FOR ANY CLASS THAT HAS A CHILD ENROLLED IN ONSITE AFTERCARE

A credit for a future class will be given to the volunteer who escorts children to/from onsite aftercare:

For a 4-6 week class,  $25 class credit

For a 7-10 week class  $40 class credit

For an 11-24 week class, $60 class credit

   AEF Cancellation/Refund policy: 

o     If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, participants will receive their full tuition refund.

o     Cancellations initiated by the participant, must be requested a minimum of 5 business days prior to the start of the class.  Credit for the cancelled class will be applied to your AEF account less a $15.00 processing fee.  This request must be made in writing to your school site enrichment coordinator.

o     No refunds are allowed after the first day of class
