Winter/Spring 2012 Class Descriptions

| Hip/Hop Acrobatics
Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of movement and timing. We will learn how to stretch and have fun learning jazz technique as well as creative dance moves for the dance floor! This class will be a blend of today’s high-energy “street style” dancing. Comfortable, fitted clothing recommended. No jeans, due to lack of material flexibility |
Knitting
Come and learn the relaxing hobby of knitting. We’ll learn the basics: Casting on, knitting, pearling, binding off and sewing with yarn. Students will get an instruction book with needles, crochet hook and yarn. Children will pick a simple project like a scarf or a small bag to work on throughout the class. |
Taiko Drumming
Jimi is a professional Taiko artist. He has played all over the world and studied his art in Japan. His class description: “Learning to play Taiko” Japanese Taiko can be a fun experience for children. In our class children will ho to strike the drum, to play together and to fell the joy of hearing the unique sound of the Taiko. |
| Cooking
Let’s get cooking! We will be learning to make a variety of items, from sandwiches to salad, cupcakes and fondue. Topics also include cooking safety and using the microwave – and we will have a field trip to our local organic garden & chicken coop at Plowshares! By the end of the class, your child will be able to safely make all the recipes in their personal cookbook, and just might give you a run for your money in the kitchen! PLEASE NOTE: All allergies must be noted to the instructor before your child is allowed to attend class. This is a peanut free class. |
Mandarin
Class for Grade 1-5 – Students learn Pinyin, conversation, characters, singing, games, etc. The class allows students to actively participate for developing their interest in Chinese language and culture. The class will be separated by grade if over maximum. Class for Kinder-Only – To foster students’ interest in the new language. Students learn nursery rhyme, pictograms through dancing, games and much more. Show Time – Perform at school events |
Carpentry
Students will discover the fun of building and working with wood. By building age appropriate projects the students will learn the safe and proper use of hand tools. They will discover the excitement of making useful and playful items for themselves and their families. Classes will begin by teaching simple skills such as using a hammer to drive nails, and move to each student successfully building a project that will range from a piece of furniture for a stuffed toy, to a foot stool or bird feeder. |

Chess
The Berkeley Chess School is a non-profit organization offering chess instruction from kindergarten through high school for over 25 years. It is an affiliate of the US Chess Federation. Over the years our students have won many state championships and several have gone on to become National Masters, FIDE Masters, and International Masters. Choral Instruction
OYC is a professional, award-winning music education program. Singers have fun learning songs from a variety of cultures and build music skills including pitch, dynamics and music theory. “Miracle” members from Alameda may perform at community events, e.g., the Oakland Holiday Parade, Alameda Tree Lighting and two OYC concerts. OYC alumni include LaToya London (American Idol Season 3). . |
Mad Science- “Crazy Chem. Works”
Use your hands as a real Mad Scientist in this whirlwind class on how a lab works! Students will learn to recognize chemical reactions and mix up a few reactive ingredients for some sensational results. We will explore the pH extremes with our Reaction Tubes in what is sure-to-be a popping experience! Create slime using the Mad Science recipe, and then enter the Slime Olympics to test your polymers. Probe the properties of light and explore some unusual applications of glow-in-the-dark technology! We will melt metal in boiling water and freeze water with just a breath of dry ice! |
| Learn to Draw!!!
Bring out the artist in your child! Learning to draw at a young age can teach your child to see his or her world in new ways. Learning to express oneself in new ways can stimulate self-awareness and encourage communication. Open the door for your child to learn the basic skills of line and contour drawing, composition, perspective, shading and sketching. In our class we will develop the habit of sketching and drawing the everyday things in our world and learn how to have fun without worrying about perfection. |
Mixed Media
Color and texture make our world exciting! Give your child the opportunity to learn the basics of using different media to show you his or her impressions of the world. Pencil and charcoal, chalk and oil pastel, paint and collage media will all be explored in this vibrant class.

*****CLASS ESCORTS SNEEDED***** WE MUST PROVIDE A VOLUNTEER ESCORT FOR ANY CLASS THAT HAS A CHILD ENROLLED IN ONSITE AFTERCARE. A credit for a future class will be given to the volunteer who escorts children to/from onsite aftercare: For a 4-6 week class, $25 class credit For a 7-10 week class $40 class credit For an 11-24 week class, $60 class credit |
| AEF Cancellation/Refund policy:
o If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, participants will receive their full tuition refund. |
o Cancellations initiated by the participant, must be requested a minimum of 5 business days prior to the start of the class. Credit for the cancelled class will be applied to your AEF | account less a $15.00 processing fee. This request must be made in writing to your school site enrichment coordinator.
o No refunds are allowed after the first day of class. |
