Winter/Spring 2012 Class Descriptions
Drama Grades 2-5 – 10 week session There will be a concentration on voice/body relationship through Improvisation skills, Physical Theatre skills & Vocal technique.  Students will work on monologues that they can use for future auditions for ACMT or Virago Theatre Company productions. Monologue work will include learning to take direction, learning stage directions, taking risks, and developing good audition skills. A showcase will be held during the last class.

Guitar – 11 week sessionThis class will introduce the concepts of melody, rhythm and harmony on guitar. Participants will learn basic fingering, chords, picking and strumming patterns. Students will agree on easy, guitar-related songs to practice toward performance on the last day of classes. Basketball  – 6 weeksIntroducing AFTER SCHOOL HOOPS®, a weekday afternoon basketball program for aspiring young players. Developing players benefit by improving their individual skills such as passing, dribbling, shooting, rebounding, and defending while, at the same time, learning how to work within the framework of a team. Boys and girls of all skill levels are encouraged to join.

The “Miracle” Chorus – 10 week session OYC is a professional, award-winning music education program.  Singers have fun learning songs from a variety of cultures and build music skills including pitch, dynamics and music theory. “Miracle” members from Alameda may perform at community events, e.g., the Oakland Holiday Parade, Alameda Tree Lighting and two OYC concerts.  OYC alumni include LaToya London (American Idol Season 3).

Comic Book Workshop  – It’s back!!!!!!! Students will learn how to write and draw a comic strip by creating their own cartoon character or super-hero.  A brief history on different cartoon styles will be introduced to the students from the  early Marvel comic books to the contemporary anime graphic novels.  Drawing techniques with pencil, pen & ink on paper will be used to produce a comic strip series by the end of the course.

Doodle  Your “Art “ Out– 7 week sessionDoodling is an “art”. Learn doodling techniques using pens, collage, photos and copies, stickers, handwriting, word art, rubber stamps, outlining.

Each student will make their own cover and personal journal using the techniques.

USTA Quickstart Tennis – 6 weeks “Quickstart” tennis www.10andundertennis.com is an exciting way to learn tennis.  The court, equipment and court dimensions are adapted for children under 10.  Even the tennis balls are special!  A parent will be needed on court to assist with the program. If you volunteer & are accepted, your child’s place will be guaranteed. You will receive a $25 stipend for your help on the court.

Please note:  There will be a Kinder only class and then separate lessons for Grades 1-3 and 4-5.

Carpentry – 8 week session Students discover the fun of working with wood; learning safe & proper use of hand tools. They discover the excitement of making useful & playful items. We begin by teaching simple skills such as using a hammer to drive nails: each student successfully builds an item such as a piece of furniture for a stuffed toy, a footstool or bird feeder.

Chess   – 8 week session Learn how to play chess or hone your skills.  Start with basic fundamentals and develop your skills.  If you have played before, Mr. Montell will challenge your knowledge and move you into the next level.  Something you may not know – Mr. Montell has played against Bobby Fisher!

Crocheting/Knitting – 8 weeks

Basic knitting & crocheting will be learned in this class.  As each person advances they will be taught new techniques.   Learning what stitches look like and how to count rows will be required for them to advance to a new level.  Reading patterns will also be a provided lesson to those who are ready for it.

Hand Sewing – 8 weeks Sewing is a wonderful skill to posses and this class will start with basic hand sewing skills, to embroidery techniques and progress to how to use a sewing machine.  The kids will be able to make a pillowcase, bag, stuffed animal, and more.  Materials will be provided but kids can bring their own to use as well.

Engineering Fundamentals IT”S BACK – 10 weeks Design and build motorized machines, catapults, pyramids, demolition derby cars, truss and suspension bridges, buildings, & other constructions.  Explore concepts in physics, mechanical engineering, structural engineering, and architecture while playing with your favorite creations. This is a hands-on and minds-on class suitable for LEGO™ Technical novices to “maniacs.”

Spanish – 12 weeks Hola estudiantes!

Come one, come all this fall, and learn your numbers, the alphabet, the seasons, and greetings, & more in Spanish! ADVANCED Students learn historical facts about Spain, like who was El Cid, and why are the windmills of La Mancha so famous! So, don’t be square; be there!

Cooking – 7 weeks Let’s get cooking!  Students learn to make a variety of items, from sandwiches to salad, cupcakes & fondue. Topics also include cooking safety & using the microwave – and we will have a field trip to our local organic garden & chicken coop at Ploughshares!  By the end of the class, your child will be able to safely make all the recipes in their personal cookbook.

PLEASE NOTE: All allergies must be noted to the instructor before your child is allowed to attend class.  This is a peanut free class.

Hip Hop – 7 weeks Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of movement & timing. They’ll learn how to stretch & have fun learning jazz technique as well as creative dance moves for the dance floor! This class will be a blend of today’s high-energy “street style” dancing. AEF Cancellation/Refund policy: o     If a class is canceled due to low enrollment, participants will receive their full tuition refund.

o     Cancellations initiated by the participant, must be requested a minimum of 5 business days prior to the start of the class.  Credit for the cancelled class will be applied to your AEF account less a $15.00 processing fee.  This request must be made in writing to your school site enrichment coordinator.

o     No refunds are allowed after the first day of class.

*****CLASS ESCORTS NEEDED***** WE MUST PROVIDE A VOLUNTEER ESCORT FOR ANY CLASS THAT HAS A CHILD ENROLLED IN ONSITE AFTERCARE.

A credit for a future class will be given to the volunteer who escorts children to/from onsite aftercare:For a 4-6 week class,  $25 class credit

For a 7-10 week class  $40 class credit

For an 11-24 week class, $60 class credit
