As we move into October, our AEF programs are in full swing. After-school enrichment classes are in session, middle school coed volleyball is progressing towards the championships, and we delivered 22 classroom adoptions in late September.
I was able to deliver that first round of adoptions. Kindergarten through high school teachers received $500 checks to use for their classrooms. It never tires seeing a teacher be overwhelmed by the donor’s generosity. The donors who come to the unannounced presentations are touched as well. I always end the adoption day feeling that we have made a difference.
We were able to make our many new teachers happy as we gave them extra Equipped 4 Success school supplies. I was especially pleased that we were able to deliver graphing calculators to Alameda High, Encinal High, and ASTI. The teachers were thrilled as well as the students.

Another Adoption Day is on Thursday Oct. 6. Unfortunately, I cannot attend. I will miss the joy on the faces of teachers and donors alike.

AEF Spotlight
AEF Alameda Asteroids hosts Middle School Cross Country Meet

The Alameda Asteroids Middle School Cross Country Club hosted a meet with 11 Bay Area schools from the SACMAL league on Wednesday, September 28th at Crab Cove. The Alameda Asteroids is a middle school cross country club managed under AEF’s after-school enrichment program. Sixth – 8th graders from Alameda middle schools participate in the running club from September through November each fall and compete as a team against schools from outside Alameda.
Represented at the meet were students from San Leandro, Newark, Union City, Castro Valley and Piedmont middle schools. Encinal High Cross Country coach Don Porteous marked the course and timed the event, and the Encinal High School Cross Country team provided course monitors, finish line monitors and tag takers. Times were recorded for 412 students; 32 of those were Alameda Asteroids. Read more.

Eat for Education!
Join us at SPIN! Pizza TODAY (Tuesday, Oct. 4) for “Dine and Donate.” Enjoy delicious neapolitan pizza (among other selections) and SPIN! will donate 15% of proceeds to AEF programs, such as middle school sports, college prep programs, and enrichment classes. Eat in or take out. What a delicious way to support students!
Alameda Running Festival is coming soon!
AEF is honored to be a beneficiary of the inaugural Bank of Marin’s Alameda Running Festival, Oct. 29 – 30. Events include a half marathon, 5k, 10k and Fun Run. There will also be kids’ activities, free food and beer, live music and DJs, and it all takes place at Alameda Point. Not much of a runner? Then consider volunteering for this fun event – and please be sure to indicate “AEF” as the organization you represent at the bottom.
