Supporting Student Success – September 2016

bill-yosemiteDear Friend,

Welcome back to the 2016-2017 school year. If my math is correct the incoming Kindergarten class will be the graduating class of 2029.

The AEF has had a very busy summer. We moved from our office from Old Alameda High School to Wood Middle on Grand Street. Our office is in Portable A-4. Thank you principal Cammie Harris and staff for the very warm welcome.

If that was not enough, our Executive Director Vicki Sedlack organized our annual Equipped 4 Success Drive, which provides school supplies for AUSD students in need. Equipped 4 Success is a collaboration of the Alameda Education Foundation, Alameda Unified School District, Alameda Boys and Girls Club, Alameda Point Collaborative, Alameda Head Start, Dream Catchers Youth Services, Girls Inc. of the Island City and Woodstock Child Development Center.  As part of Equipped 4 Success, we were able to provide brand new graphing calculators to assist high level Math at Alameda, Encinal and ASTI high schools. Vicki and I presented the calculators on Tuesday, August 29th to very appreciative teachers and students. Thank you to all our donors and partners for making Equipped 4 Success a reality for so many students.

Not to be outdone, our Enrichment Director Sarah Olaes ran 70 summer enrichment camps in a wide array of subjects. You can read a first-hand perspective of one of those camps in the “Spotlight” section of this e-newsletter.

The beginning of the school year marks a new middle school sport – co-ed volleyball, the return of our ever popular Adopt A Classroom, and a great selection of after school enrichment classes. I, along with the AEF staff and our entire Board, wish the best for all our students, staff and parents as we embark on the 2016-17 school year.

Sincerely,
Bill Sonneman

AEF Summer Camp – A 5-Star Review

Summer Camp

Summer Camp

My name is Amy and I took the circus arts camp from AEF. The circus arts camp was my favorite camp, and I have done a lot of camps. I mastered the stilts, floor, plate spinning, low bar, Diabolo, and more in my week of camp. We got a 20-minute break to go outside. We even got to try out a unicycle!

The instructors were very kind and energetic. There were a few kids who were challenging but the instructors were able to help them learn things, which they showed at the end of the camp show. Everybody learned at least two things in the camp, which was great. The instructors did a very good job and it was very fun. This camp was awesome and I give it a five star rating.

Eat for Education!

pizzaJoin us at SPIN! Pizza (at Alameda Landing) on “first Tuesdays” in Sept., Oct., Nov. and Dec. for “Dine and Donate.” Eat pizza (or anything else) and SPIN! will donate 15% of proceeds to AEF programs, such as middle school sports, college prep programs, and enrichment classes. Eat in or take out. What a delicious way to support students!

Personal Statement Workshop

The college application season is upon us.  Many applications, including all UC’s, require a personal statement and that is a type of writing many students do not have experience in. Give your student the edge by signing them up for AEF’s Personal Statement Workshop on Sept. 10th and 17th, 9 AM – 1 PM.  The cost is only $110 and scholarships are available.
