Class Descriptions

BERKELEY CHESS
The Berkeley Chess School's chess programs are designed for beginning, intermediate and advanced students of all ages. They provide a rigorous training in chess while making the process fun, with skilled and engaging instructors and an eye toward personal growth.

BASIC ANIMATION ART
Animation is in media all around us everywhere we look.  From the games we play, to the shows on TV and definitely in the movies we watch.  Lots of students are wondering how it's all made and how they too can get started.

BASIC ANIMATION is a class for students 3rd to 5th grade and runs for a total of 6, 1.5 hour classes. The history of animation to supplies and production will be discussed.   All materials and supplies will be provided so that each student can complete a short, hand drawn, 2D animated flipbook that they can take home to show their family and friends.
KIDS TAKE THE STAGE  “SEUSSICAL JR.”
This performance-oriented class is designed to give beginning-intermediate students a chance to experience the process of putting on a full- length professional play. Each play is carefully selected in character content as to give every actor a chance to shine on stage and limits enrollment to the number of parts in the production.
Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters. The score emerges as a Seussian Gumbo of musical styles, ranging from Latin to pop, swing to gospel, and R&B to funk! So let your toes tap, your fingers snap, and you're imagination run wild for "Oh, the thinks you can think, When you think about Seuss!"
 Tennis A

Franklin Park Tennis Courts--Instructor will escort children to class. Children are to be picked up at the tennis courts unless they attend Island Kids Daycare which they will be escorted back after class.

Tennis B

Tennis Instructor will escort children to the tennis courts. Children should congregate outside of Room #2 on the bench where the instructor will take roll. At the end of class, children are to be picked up at the tennis courts by the parent or guardian unless they attend Island Kids Daycare. These children will be escorted back to daycare after class.

ART WITH
ALIEA WALLACE

This 8 week class has a well-rounded curriculum within the world of fine art. Aliea Wallace, formerly of MONART, has a B.F.A. in painting and has exhibited across the country. She has 4 years of experience teaching art and a lifetime of experience with children.

All lessons and exercises will be non-competitive and created to build student skills and confidence with: creative thinking, coordination, problem-solving, and art/art history vocabulary. The majority of drawing/painting projects will have an emphasis on realism. Note:  Additional $10 material fee payable to Aliea Wallace due on the 1st day of class.

Class Descriptions

Art with Ja Ying

Each week, students work with a variety of media to produce dazzling artwork that they  and their parents will be proud to display.  Art projects may include glass mosaics, wire/clay sculpture, acrylic painting, watercolor painting, and more.

About JaYing Wang

JaYing has taught art to children since 1999.  She owned the former Children's Art Studio on High Street, is the head Art Docent at St. Philip Neri Elementary, and has taught AUSD enrichment art classes since 2004.

JaYing is also an accomplished mosaic artist completing many public and private installations.  A notable sunflower mural is located outside Trader Joe's at Alameda's Towne Center.

Tennis A & B

Kids will enjoy learning tennis fundamentals with Debbie Douglas, instructor at the Harbor Bay Club.  This class will focus on serving, ground strokes, volleys, and basic coordination skills progressing through technical skills.  Balls provided; some racquets available.

Mad Science

Crazy Chemworks: Use your hands as a real Mad Scientist in this whirlwind class on how a lab works! Students will learn to recognize chemical reactions and mix up a few reactive ingredients for some sensational results. We will explore the pH extremes with our Reaction Tubes in what is sure-to-be a popping experience! Create slime using the Mad Science recipe, and then enter the Slime Olympics to test your polymers. Probe the properties of light and explore some unusual applications of glow-in-the-dark technology! We will melt metal in boiling water and freeze water with just a breath of dry ice!

Native Bird Class

This 8 week program offers children the opportunity to learn about birds and bird identification especially those found right here in Alameda.  Kids will bird watch, interact with live non-releasable wild birds, create bird journals and crafts helping birds in their neighborhood.  Each student will receive a canvas bag to decorate.  This is a wonderful environmental class for kids to enjoy!!

Dance with Yolanda Champion

NEW CLASS OFFERING!

Students will learn dances based on moves from Africa, the Caribbean and Mexico.  This class will also give students a cultural tour of other parts of the world. Yolanda's dances are comprised of traditional moves combined with her own personal style and choreography. Ms. Champion has danced most of her life and is currently a member of the Maestros Del Folklor Mexicano and The Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts Program. Students will perform dances learned in this class for their families at the end of this session.
