It Began With a Backpack
When the Alameda Education Foundation (AEF) began running our annual backpack and school supply drive in 2012, the Alameda Point Collaborative (APC) was one of our first community partners. According to APC Children and Youth Manager Sara Christensen, APC initially lined up backpacks on a table for parents to pick up. But the staff at APC soon recognized that AEF’s annual donation of backpacks and school supplies provided an opportunity to do much more for their families.
Soon a Girl Scout troop was leading carnival games, My New Red Shoes provided shoes and gift cards, and All Good Living donated clothing. A picnic was added. Soon, representatives from the Alameda police and fire departments began to attend, then school principals and teachers. The picnic became a barbeque, and the event became an opportunity to create positive relationships between APC families and the community. “Prior to this, our parents often would not meet their student’s teacher or principal unless there was a problem,” explained Christensen, “but because of this event, relationships are built before school starts. It builds bridges between our families and the schools and community.”
Although COVID has toned down the activities, AEF’s school supply drive is still the basis for creating excitement for school. “Traditionally, back-to-school shopping is a positive experience for kids. It is important that our kids get that experience, too.” added Christensen.
Another thing that the families at APC appreciate is that AEF provides quality backpacks and supplies. “We often talk about equity in schools and this is one of the things. Little kids notice whether you have the cheap crayons or the quality ones. Having quality supplies helps them fit in,” explained Christensen.
APC’s event has blossomed from a backpack giveaway to a community event that makes students and their parents feel a sense of pride and excitement about going back to school. But the biggest thing to Christensen is the “smiles on our kids’ faces.”
