This combination beginner and intermediate level class will cover/review chess basics (chessboard terminology and square identification; how the various pieces move and capture, plus their relative values; pawn promotion; the crucial concepts of check, checkmate, and stalemate; the special move of castling; opening goals and principles; basic tactics; endgame checkmates using major pieces; and last, but not least, good chess etiquette) on a class-wide basis or individually during supervised play as needed. Instruction will otherwise focus on learning tactics and strategy through the explanation of games and positions from historical players and events, and current top-level competitions.

AEF/ACC afterschool chess classes are split time-wise between instruction and supervised play. The instructor will organize and run an unofficial tournament during the last 3-5 weeks of this level course, with labeled medals as awards for all participants upon completion.

All enrolled students earn and accumulate points towards ACC's Royalty Loyalty Program (RLP) rewards by participating in the instruction half of class and playing with good chess etiquette afterwards. RLP rewards consist of chess-related items, including chess puzzle books and equipment.

Numerous studies have suggested that learning and playing chess at an early age can yield various benefits regarding cognitive skills. Confidence, decision-making, and sportsmanship are other areas of potential improvement. The benefits and enjoyment of chess can last a lifetime!

Aloha Ukulele takes students on a musical journey through the beautiful islands of Hawaii. The keiki, meaning “little ones,” will learn how to play songs on their ukulele while also learning the art, language and traditions of Hawaii. In addition to musical activities, students will have the opportunity to create flower lei, bead art, and other creative projects.

Basketball is a great introductory game into sport. In this class your student will learn the basic skills of coordination and motor skills through dribbling, pivoting, catching and shooting - all skills that overlap into other sports.

We will begin with the basics of drawing, such as line, shape, color, contrast, and technique. They will be introduced to different artists and stylings while being encouraged to embrace their unique vision and style of drawing.

Step into a world of wonder with our Magic in Motion workshop!. In this interactive class, students will uncover the secrets behind age-appropriate magic tricks using safe, everyday objects. Over the course of the program, they’ll master a variety of illusions—from simple card and coin tricks, to sleight-of-hand maneuvers with scarves and rope. Kids will learn how to make small objects vanish and reappear, perform a delightful disappearing handkerchief trick, and even create the illusion of a floating pencil. Each session is packed with hands-on practice, guided demonstrations, and fun challenges that encourage creativity and boost confidence. Our experienced instructor ensures a nurturing, engaging environment where every child can become a true magician, captivating their audience with skills they can proudly showcase.

Example Lesson:
In this lesson, students learn the art of the disappearing handkerchief trick—a fun introduction to misdirection and timing. The instructor begins by demonstrating the trick slowly, explaining each step while emphasizing how subtle movements and confident gestures create the illusion of magic. The class then breaks into small groups where each student practices handling a lightweight handkerchief, focusing first on the basic grips and smooth, deliberate motions. With plenty of guidance, the instructor introduces the concept of misdirection, showing how a simple gesture or a playful comment can draw the audience’s attention away from the secret move. As students practice, they pair up to take turns performing the trick for each other, receiving constructive feedback on their timing and presentation.
