Julia Jawad, an SAI (Specialized Academic Instruction) teacher at Lincoln Middle School, used her AEF Teacher Mini Grant for a variety of materials to support a farm-to-table science-based curriculum. Her classes repaired planter boxes, added new soil and compost and created a composter so students could learn about recycling green materials to make soil. Students planted seeds and seedlings and learned about where food comes from in their life skills curriculum. Ms. Jawad plans on having weekly cooking lessons using the produce they grow. Students will also learn earning, counting money and budgeting via the classroom 'store'. The grant supports vocational and life skills for students to prepare for independent living and employment opportunities in the future.
