These are the student poems inspired by the nature poetry of Maw Shein Win. At AEF's Poetry Slam at Books Inc. on March 22, 2025, she read her poem Thistles, talked about her life and her poetry writing, and took questions from the audience. She ended the program by giving each attendee a broadsheet which included a copy of her poem with a photograph of a thistle.
Twelve students read their poems inspired by the nature poetry of Maw Shein Win and their words are magical and inspirational! Students poets represented Alameda High, Encinal High, Lincoln Middle School, Bay Farm, Earhart, Edison, Love, Maya Lin and Otis Elementary Schools.

The Great Sandwich Race by Thea (Edison 3rd Grader)
Sleek fur, small feather
Dark talons, white paws
Large, gaping maws.
Bread sitting
Tomatoes for tasting
Lettuce for crunching
Cheese for munching
Sandwich for eating
Sandwich for eating.
Run quick
Fly swift
Arrive at the food
No time for a mood
Race with your talons and paws
Race with your beaks or maws
Devour the sandwich
Faster than cars.
Sudden stop
What’s that?
A human snatches it back!
There goes the food.
They say: “It’s for their own good!”
Out the door, bolt out the door.
Into the backyard.
There floats down a card
With 2 things on it.
Both get some food
A sandwich is the food!
Gobble with your beaks, jaws,
Talons and paws.

She hit the mosquito
She hit the rock
She hit the minnow
But she didn’t hit me.
Otters Are Mammals by Marina
Otters are animals
That live in the water
They are mammals
Not camels.
They live in the river
And don’t bother to shiver
Because they have fur
So, they don’t say brrr.
Otters are animals that dive
To get food from the lake to stay alive
While they float
Like a boat.
So, they can bake
And crack
The back
Of a crab.
The otters wrap their babies in kelp
So, they don’t yelp
For help.
Otters are mammals
Not camels.
