Students Power Up Robots for Competition

The Alameda Robotics Center is holding its inaugural Alameda Robotics Center tournament on Saturday, May 7, 2016 from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM in the Wood Middle School Makerspace, located at 420 Grand St.

About 50 students from Wood Middle, Lum Elementary, Ruby Bridges Elementary, Nea, and Encinal Jr. High School will be participating in the competition in which teams compete to see whose robots can complete a series of tasks for the most points.

march-innovation-in-schoolsAt Henry Haight Elementary School, third graders have been writing African poetry and will be making windmills (with the help of Alameda Municipal Power) based on the book, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, to support global learning and environmental stewardship.

At Franklin Elementary, parents Jill and Taggart Gorman continue their work with the Ability Awareness Program that nurtures respect for individual difference and celebrates the many talents of their children.

From “Bummed Out” to Sports Star

spotlight-bb-feb16Daniel transferred to his new middle school in the beginning of 6th grade. After a few weeks, the AEF Middle School Sports coach, who is also a P.E. teacher at the school, noticed he was hanging by himself and had little enthusiasm. Daniel told the coach he was having a hard time making friends and was feeling  “bummed out”. The coach suggested sports as a way for him to get involved.

Wood Volleyball Team Raises Money for Breast Cancer Awareness

Our Middle School Sports program provides students with a safe, healthy after-school activity that supports sportsmanship, teamwork, goal setting, self-confidence and school spirit.  But you never know what else can happen when you put a group of determined middle schoolers together.

The Wood Middle School volleyball players decided they wanted to support breast cancer awareness.  Throughout the month of October the girls donned pink hair bows and the boys pink socks and laces.

Come check out the AEF Middle School Sports volleyball playoffs and championships this week! Playoffs begin Tuesday, 11/19/13, when the #4 Jr. Jets take on #1 Lincoln Lions in the A division, while Wood (#4) battles the Lions in the B division. On Wednesday, 11/20/13, it’s #3 Academy of Alameda challenging #2 Wood in the A division and Bay Farm (#3) against Jr. Jets (#2) in the B division. Then, Thursday, 11/21,
