If your child is a fan of cuddly animals and funny cartoons, this drawing workshop is especially tailored for his or her needs. Over the course of five days, our students will learn how to draw animals of all shapes, sizes, and colors. Hajime! (Begin!) establishes a strong base of judo technique, culture, and character. As we jump, run, and roll we develop balance, coordination and confidence! And we have fun! We start out learning our names in Japanese then do movement exercises and some simple judo techniques that teach us to fall safely. We place a strong emphasis on culture so everyone speaks the language of Japan. We learn to nete (lie down) and to tonde (leap) like a raion (lion). Judo allows a smaller person to control an opponent bigger and stronger than themselves. We learn to hold a person down with kesa-gatame (scarf hold) and we practice throws where our opponent can be flipped upside-down – on Sensei. Every class finishes with games that develop physical coordination, balance and laughter. We sing in Japanese about inspiration and bow to each other respectfully. Then we say arigotoh, thank you. Respect and discipline are as much a part of Hanabi as smiling.

A fun-filled, action-packed introduction to the art of acting! Using theater games, acting exercises, storytelling, and scene-work, this class will teach true theater skills, build self-confidence, and inspire the imagination! Class culminates with a free performance of scenes and monologues for friends, fans and family members!

What connects Alameda to Australia, Antarctica and Alaska? Where did life begin, and where does the largest animal ever to live on earth still live? What is huger than you can imagine, but needs your protection? The ocean is all that and more. Guided by a real oceanographer, we will explore the ocean with stories, art and a lot of hands-on science. Cynthia Cudaback PhD (a.k.a. Dr C) is an Oakland native and UC Berkeley graduate with a deep love for the ocean environment. She has piloted large research vessels across the Pacific Ocean and studied estuarine and coastal areas from Washington State to North Carolina. She has taught students from ages four through 104 about the ocean and its wonderful inhabitants.

After School Hoops® is a weekday afternoon basketball program for aspiring young players. The one hour instructional sessions combine fundamental skills instruction with organized team competition with the goal of providing an enjoyable and educational after school athletic event. Developing players benefit by improving their individual skills such as passing, dribbling, shooting, rebounding, and defending while, at the same time, learning how to work within the framework of a team. Boys and girls of all skill levels are encouraged to join. One of the many merits of After School Hoops® is that it provides school children with an organized after school event at which they can learn, socialize, and most of all, have fun. Parents and teachers often express concern that idle and unsupervised after school hours provide too many negative temptations for their children. Using athletics as the vehicle, After School Hoops® provides children with an opportunity to improve their overall physical fitness, develop sportsmanship and athletic integrity, and gain an understanding of the game of basketball.
