Pursuing a Career in Journalism

"I sincerely appreciate AEF’s mini grant that helped to sponsor students from the Encinal Jr. Sr. High School (EJSHS) CTE Radio pathway to attend the College Broadcasters, Inc., conference in October. This year the conference was held in Orlando, Florida, so the students and I had to raise money for airfare, lodging, and registration. Four EJSHS students from my advanced broadcasting class went on the trip and they gained so much from the experience. Christopher Setera is one of the students who attended the conference, and he wrote a thank you note on behalf of his fellow students (see below). I encourage everyone to tune into EJSHS radio station weekday mornings from 7 am – 11 am to hear our talented crew of student broadcasters at encinalradio.com or on the radio at 96.1 FM!"

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart for AEF’s donation that helped to fund our educational experience at the CBI conference. We all gained invaluable knowledge that will help us in our endeavors in school and in our future careers in broadcasting. At the conference we attended panels on ways to cover community news and events in a responsible and ethical manner. We also learned how to produce content for pre-recorded pieces and live segments from broadcasting veterans. I appreciated learning about various career paths and education opportunities in broadcasting. Personally, my favorite part of the conference was connecting with other radio stations that operated at high schools and colleges. It was great to see what worked, and didn't work, for other stations along with the checking out the types of music formats they offered. We are all thinking about the content we can bring back and adapt for our own listeners at KJTZ. I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity given to me in being able to attend the conference. I learned so much from so many people in the field that I wouldn't have gotten from anywhere else without the AEF donation."
