The Alameda Education Foundation (AEF) understands that recent reports of Custom Border Protection (I.C.E.) agents moving into Alameda has sparked fears and anxieties across the Bay Area. As a reminder, all AEF affiliated staff remain committed to welcoming, accepting, and protecting all our students and families, regardless of their immigration or citizenship status in accordance with AUSD policies.
Helpful Resources for AUSD families and staff
Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) Resources
AUSD policy, aligned with federal and state laws, states that no student can be denied equal rights and opportunities based on their immigration or citizen status. Additionally, it prohibits school districts from collecting information regarding the citizenship or immigration status of their families and sharing any confidential student information.
AEF providers and school site staff know the AUSD protocols should ICE agents come to campus during AEF After School Enrichment classes or sports related activities. Under AR 5145.13, the Superintendent MUST give ICE advance approval before it may enter district sites, unless entry is otherwise authorized by law:
Administrative Regulation 5145.13Â Â ("Response to Immigration Enforcement") details the steps staff are to take if immigration agents come onto AUSD campuses. Most importantly, within the constraints of the law, school sites are not to provide agents with student information, allow them to question students, or remove them from campus. Instead:
- Teachers and other staff should immediately notify a site administrator
- Site administrators, in turn, should immediately contact the Superintendent (510-337-7060) or Assistant Superintendent of Student Services (510-337-7095)Â for guidance in how to respond.
Know Your Rights
Do not spread rumors on social media. Do not help ICE spread panic. Do not pass on unverified reports of raids. Stay alert, informed and, most important, know your rights under the law.
- If you are in Alameda County and witness Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in action, suspect ICE activity in progress, or if you or someone you know is detained by ICE, please contact the Hotline at (510) 241-4011 during the operating hours of 6AM - 6PM. Priority will be given to calls related to ICE arrests.
- Alameda County Immigration Legal Education Partnership (ACILEP) has detailed and helpful information.
- Print a 'Know Your Rights' Red Card (Spanish and English)
- Create a Family Preparedness Plan - families should create a plan in case of an emergency, including designating someone who can care for their children if needed. You can read and print a plan here.
AEF is committed to protecting our community and ensuring all students can enjoy the programs we offer regardless of immigration status. We are here if you have questions or concerns - [email protected].
