Touchdown! Get Ready for Middle School Flag Football

The wait is over, Alameda. After hearing strong community interest, the Alameda Education Foundation (AEF) is excited to announce the launch of a middle school flag football league on the Island this spring.
In partnership with United Sports and NFL Flag, AEF is offering a competitive boys and girls flag football league open to all Alameda middle school students. This new program builds on last year’s successful middle school girls flag football league, facilitated by United Sports and NFL Flag. With AEF’s support, the league has now expanded to include boys as well, creating more opportunities for students to get involved in this popular sport.
United Sports, a dedicated youth sports nonprofit, brings experienced coaches and a strong commitment to positive youth development. With the added support of engaged parent volunteers, AEF is confident the league will deliver a rewarding and well-run season for all participants.
While the league will be competitive, remaining consistent with other AEF middle school sports, all students who register will be placed on a team. You can even request to play with a friend or for a specific coach! Teams will be formed based on age and skill level rather than school affiliation. This structure allows students to connect with peers from across Alameda, fostering new friendships and a broader sense of community.
Aligned with AEF’s guiding principles, the flag football league will emphasize growth beyond the game itself. Athletes of all experience levels are welcome and will be encouraged to develop leadership, resilience, teamwork, and confidence—skills that translate both on and off the field. The program is designed to nurture the whole athlete and support overall student development.
Participation in flag football will also remain flexible as the season will overlap with the end of boys basketball and the beginning of track and field. Any students that are interested in playing flag football that are also interested in basketball and/or track and field will be able to do both! United Sports and AEF will work together to ensure scheduling allows students to explore and enjoy multiple sports throughout the season.
With this new offering, AEF and United Sports are proud to expand access to athletics and continue building meaningful, inclusive opportunities for Alameda’s middle school students.
