AEF's Guiding Principles for Middle School Sports

Program Principals

  1. Health and Safety
    • Adherence to applicable COVID and/or other health or safety protocols.
    • Recognition that social emotional health can be supported through a positive sports environment.
  2. Focus on Equity
    • Team selection should be made in consultation with side administrators with consideration of who would most benefit from team participation.
    • Inclusivity is an important value of the program.
    • Sites will actively reach out to students who may not be reached in regular outreach efforts.
    • Rules may be modified or developed to support the developing student-athlete.
    • Team/individual recognitions provided to support life-skills like sportsmanship, integrity, and grit.
  3. Preparation for high school
    • Academic and behavioral tie-ins.
      • To participate in AEF Sports, AEF requires that student-athletes have a 2.0 minimum G.P.A. with no single grade of an 'F' as of the most recent site grading term. If you have questions about grades or school performance, please contact your school site Athletic Director or Administrator.

Player, Parent/Guardian, and Spectator Code of Conduct

In an effort to make our sports program a positive experience for all student-athletes, AEF has established basic Code of Conduct requirements for students, parent/guardians, and spectators. Your school site may have additional requirements. Please be familiar with these and support the positive development of our youth by adhering to these.

2023-2024 Volleyball Championship Results

Congratulations Encinal and Lincoln Volleyball

Congratulations to Encinal Jr. Jets and Lincoln Lions for their AEF Middle School Sports Coed Volleyball Championships!

In Division I action, the Encinal Jr. Jets defended their title by defeating the Wood Beavers on October 24th 2-1 (25-15, 23-25, 15-13). In Division II action on November 14th, it was the Lincoln Lions over Encinal 2-0 (25-20, 25-14).

Fall volleyball included 10 teams and 140 student-athletes representing all seven public middle schools in Alameda. Students learned valuable life skills about teamwork and goal-setting. AEF’s Sports program is not like other youth leagues in that we include behavioral and academic tie-ins to support students’ developmental and academic growth as well. As one student from Bay Farm told us, “Thank you so much. Without you guys, I wouldn’t have experienced being on a team. You guys don’t know how much I am grateful.”

Girls basketball is next with games beginning Nov. 28th.

Impact of Middle School Sports – Volleyball

After our team party last week, one mom emailed me. She said her daughter came home all smiles and announced, “Mom, I found my thing! Sign me up for volleyball every year!”
