Multilingualism Rocks!
Ms. Candice Camp is an Instructional Coach working with K-5th, multilingual English learners across the District. She wanted to help English learners at school reclassification ceremonies celebrate and be proud of the hard work it takes to become ‘reclassified’ with a t-shirt that says “Multilingualism is my Superpower”.
Reclassification for English Language Learners (ELL) means that a student is officially recognized as having achieved sufficient proficiency in English to no longer require special language support services. Once reclassified, the student is considered fluent and proficient in English.
The emotional and cultural impact of this initiative is significant. Students consistently express pride and excitement when receiving the t-shirts, often choosing to wear them together on designated days, creating visible, school-wide affirmation of multilingual identity. These moments foster belonging, confidence, and a sense of accomplishment.
The recognition ceremonies themselves are deeply meaningful. For example, at a recent event, two older siblings who had previously reclassified wore their own shirts to celebrate their younger sibling earning theirs—demonstrating how this initiative builds family pride and reinforces positive identity across grade levels. Stories like these highlight how the grant supports not just individual students, but entire families and communities.
By publicly celebrating reclassification, we reduce the stigma often associated with English Learner status and designated ELD classes. Instead, students begin to see multilingualism as a strength and a “superpower” that enriches our school community. This shift in mindset promotes inclusivity, honors students’ linguistic and cultural assets, and aligns with broader educational goals of equity and belonging.
Ms. Candy wrote: “This grant will help cultivate a school culture where multilingualism is celebrated, students feel seen and valued, and linguistic diversity is recognized as a powerful contribution to society.
These T-shirts are so appreciated across the district. I hope you get to see them out and about around town. Thank you for all your support in elevating multilingual identity and reducing stigma. It makes a difference.”
