‘Descendants: The Story of Us‘ was the Lunda Award recipient at the 22nd Annual Oakland International Film Festival in October 2024. This short film, created and produced by Shanti Lair–Croom and directed by Shaun Daniels, best exemplified the theme of the Lunda Award through its depiction of the journey and obstacles faced by several families right here in the East Bay in their pursuit of the American dream.
The Lunda people were known to have of the largest expansions in Central Africa.
National Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins in the United States each year on Sep. 15 and ends on Oct. 15, celebrates U.S. Latinos, their culture and their history. AEF’s Art Changes program features five artists who represent Hispanic Culture: Brazilian landscape painter Alex D. da Silva, Joaquin Newman who builds on the tradition of Mayan art, Bolivian-American painter and weaver Miguel Arzabe, water-colorist and muralist Irene Juarez-O’Connell,
AEF will have a table at the AUSD Wellness Fair at Ruby Bridges with information on accessing Care Solace support for mental health. We will have a raffle with a prize at the event.

Dear Friends,
I am writing to let you know that I will be retiring by the end of this school year.
I have been with AEF for 15 years and working here has been my passion. I love supporting education and I love the huge impact we make on Alameda students every single day. I have been so lucky to have my passion and my job be the same thing.

AEF had a booth at the Alameda Pride in the Park Festival on October 5, 2024. Our spin wheel for prizes was a big hit with the kids! Thanks to AEF Board member Nuala Creedon and Enrichment Director Rachel Plato for manning the AEF booth at the Alameda Pride Festival and also to Board members Jen Bullock, Grace Caulfield and Page Tomblin for helping as well. AEF was proud and happy to celebrate Alameda’s LGTBQ+ community with you!

AEF is pleased to announce the hiring of Matt Scully as the AEF Sports Director. Matt comes to AEF after coaching two years for Encinal Jr. Jets basketball and brings a background in youth coaching, nonprofit work, computer systems and Human Resources. Matt will be taking over the running of AEF’s Middle School Sports program, which serves approximately 700 6th – 8th graders from Alameda’s public middle schools with year-round after school competitive sports leagues.
