Native artist Joaquin Newman builds on the tradition of Mayan art where faces were drawn in profile so that the subject is not looking at the viewer, but at things within the artwork. By painting profiles Newman tells a story of what is happening within his work. And what is happening are beautiful nature scenes that draw on Indigenous stories. In the project video, you will draw a profile, using easy steps to follow the eye, nose, mouth and chin line. Then, you will surround your face with scenery. Markers on Kraft paper work best, though crayons on regular paper can be substituted.
