March 2018 Newsletter

Message from the AEF President

Dear Friend,

I have been busy enjoying the AEF Middle School basketball program. The boys season is concluding as the girls season concluded six weeks ago.

Track is right around the corner. The AEF has not always run the Middle School After School Athletic program. It was an AUSD program for many years, devised and run by the iconic Jack Capon in the 1950’s. The entire program was cut in 2006 as part of many AUSD budget cuts at that time.

Filling the gap as usual, the AEF took it upon themselves to restart an athletic program for middle school students in 2009. Once there were 3 middle schools, today there are 7 with almost 700 public middle school students participating. This is quite an undertaking for an education foundation, but it is worth it.

A parent volunteer scorekeeper at a game just the other day told me how appreciative the parents are of the AEF middle school sports program. He said if it wasn’t for the AEF there wouldn’t be any middle school athletics. He knows AEF programs make a difference, and I could only smile and say thank you.

Mark your calendars for the 35th Annual Salute To Education on April 27th at Rhythmix Cultural Works. Look forward to seeing you there.

All the best,
