May 2018 Newsletter
Message from the AEF President
Dear Friend,
Congratulations to the Class of 2018! The entire Alameda Education Foundation wishes you the best as you enter the next chapter of your lives. We also recognize the students being promoted to middle and high school, knowing this is the next big step in your education.
The Alameda Education Foundation has completed another successful year enhancing the educational lives of so many of our Alameda public school students through our programs. Middle School Sports, Adopt A Classroom, Enrichment and College Prep programs, and Equipped 4 Success have assisted and aided our wonderful students and teachers. One of the many highlights this year was a highly successful Robotics program and a competition held in May. Thank you, Alameda Municipal Power for helping make Robotics in our schools a reality through the Power Up For Learning program.
Our annual Salute to Education event was held on April 27th at Rhythmix Cultural Works. Our co-chairs Kelly Scott and Pam Riley Chang with the assistance of the entire AEF Board, staff, and volunteers helped make the event a great success.
We welcome Kelly Lux as our newest AEF Board member. She is a great addition to our outstanding Board.
Enjoy the summer break. Don’t forget we have a variety of summer Enrichment camps for elementary and middle school students. The camps are all held at Bay Farm School, and there is still some space available.
All the best,
Bill Sonneman
AEF Board President
Our summer Enrichment camps begin June 25th!
There is still space in some of our camps, which are for students in (completed) kindergarten through 8th grade. Our camps feature dozens of enrichment learning opportunities in the arts, science and technology, cooking and so much more. Students have a chance to explore academic and creative areas in small class sizes with expert instruction. Most camps are one week sessions, either morning or afternoon.
All camps are held at Bay Farm School, 200 Aughinbaugh Way. Need after-care? We have options! Students in K – 3rd will go to nearby Godfrey Park with Alameda Rec and Parks. 4th – 5th students will have their own program, “Unplugged with Miss Frances.” Students registered in our Spanish camps can register for after-care offered by our Spanish instructor.

It took 34 years, but we have a new record in the 1600 8th grade boys event at our Track championships on May 8th. Congratulations to Carlo Gaytan Flores for setting a new record with a 4:59! In all, 306 students participated in our Track & Field program this spring. For the year, we saw 672 registrations – a new record – in our year-round Middle School Sports program that includes volleyball (fall), basketball (winter) and Track & Field.
