Sensory Support Helps All Students in the Classroom be More Successful

AEF fulfilled a Teacher Mini Grant request from Amy Miller, a 3rd grade teacher at Ruby Bridges Elementary, for sensory support aides, including seating for all her students. She wrote:

"With a rather high [number] of my students having ADHD, autism, or behavior differences, providing sensory support for all students will enable them to be successful in a general education classroom with out feeling as if they stand out. Providing flexible seating for students and sensory support will also enable them to have the potential to become self-aware of the environment in which they learn best, resulting in positive influence in the learning environment and the well-being of all students. Flexible seating stimulating the sense of touch that can help students with ADHD and autism focus and process information that are conductive to learning."

"From the first day of implementation my students are calmer and able to focus on tasks longer. The grant enabled me to purchase several different seating options for students to choose, along with sensory fidgets and items to earn for a break. These items are available to every student in my class thanks to the generous donations and efforts of AEF!"
