What’s New for Cross Country This Fall

Starting this year, AEF’s Asteroids Cross Country program will be a part of the Middle School sports program. The program – previously run under AEF Enrichment – is open to students enrolled in Alameda Unified and Charter public middle schools grades 6th-8th. The Alameda Asteroids is unlike AEF’s other middle school sports because it provides a unique opportunity for student-athletes to compete together on one team representing Alameda against other middle schools in the league. The Asteroids practice Monday through Thursday at Lower Washington Park and attend a total of four meets during the season, three of which are away and one hosted at home. This year we’ll also have an additional IntraSquad meet at the end of the season for one more test of endurance and grit!

As we prepare to embark on this new season, I’d like to take a moment to introduce our coaches and share some of the exciting aspects of the Cross Country program. First and foremost, a huge thank you to our former Head Coach Debra Cramer who retired after leading the team for the last four years. Coach Don Porteous will return bringing his wealth of knowledge and experience back for another year. This time he’ll be joined by Peter Gimore and Mike Rossi, the latter of which will serve as the new Head Coach. Peter is a dedicated parent who just completed his first season as head coach for the Encinal Jr. Jets track and field team. Mike began his running career many years ago as a sophomore at St. Joseph’s High School and is still running today over 50 years later! He brings his experience, expertise, and passion for running as well as a wealth of coaching experience having served as a coach for Piedmont’s schools the last couple of years. Mike is looking forward to coaching our Asteroids this year and wants to ensure each student-athlete experiences the right combination of fitness, fun, competition, and camaraderie.

We’re so excited to welcome our Asteroids into the Middle School sports program and continue providing a space for middle schoolers to learn about cross country running, develope endurance skills, and maybe even gain a life-long love of running!
