In our October e-newsletter, I wrote about ‘What is Equity?’ and how AEF is focusing on making equity central to our work. Now that it has been a few months, I wanted to share some reflections on this journey and invite you to reflect as well.
The journey began with each of us on the board and staff taking individual and collective deep dives into learning more about ourselves: our beliefs,

“It has been so wonderful to let students know that I can purchase the books that they are requesting immediately! Attached is a picture of some of the books I have been able to purchase this past week & am rushing to get processed for students to borrow over our week break. “Thank you again for your generous grant to our classroom! With your grant, we were able to purchase a year long supply of amazing toys/prizes for our Star Store. Our school has a PBIS system where our emphasis is on positive incentives for following our school and class expectations. Students receive “star cards” for following our school expectations.

AEF funded stipends for two FabLab instructors from College of Alameda who will assist Gerard Dumuk in starting the Engineering course and coordinate workshop sessions for students at CoA’s FabLab. Gerard has set up the Fab Lab equipment and the Island High students are already producing products. This shelving in the photo was made with a 3D printer.
