Alameda Asteroids Host Cross Country Meet

The Alameda Asteroids, a middle school cross country club, hosted their final meet for the season on October 26 at Crab Cove. Eleven teams with 190 sixth, seventh and eighth grade boys and girls participated in four events. Girls and Boys 1.1 and 2.1 races.

College Volleyball Hopeful Started with AEF Middle School Sports

Many student-athletes who begin their sports careers in AEF’s Middle School Sports program go on to serve as coaches and referees when they reach high school. Currently, Encinal’s coach is a former participant and the ACLC/Nea basketball and track programs regularly include former players in coaching roles.

We connected with one of these high schoolers, Naomi White, who is currently a senior at Encinal High School. Naomi started playing volleyball at Wood Middle School with the AEF Middle School Sports (MSS) program and continues to be involved in the program as a referee.

‘Art Across the Island’ on Display Around Town

New artwork from Alameda students is on display at several Alameda libraries and Books Inc. through Alameda Education Foundation’s Art Across the Island program.

Students from Love Elementary School teacher Scott Hixon’s third-grade class made abstract drawings, which they cut apart and then wove with pieces of construction paper. Their pieces are inspired by artist Miguel Arzabe, who is known for filling canvases with paint then cutting them into strips and weaving the pieces into a completely new work.

Artist and Teacher Constance Moore at Books Inc.

Books Inc. Alameda welcomes local illustrator Constance Moore to celebrate her illustrated picture book Black: The Many Wonders of My World, with a story time and art activity! Ms. Moore, who is also the art teacher at Maya Lin Elementary school in Alameda, is a featured artist for Alameda Education Foundation’s online Art Changes program, where local artists create videos introducing their work while weaving in stories of inspiration and perspective that reflect the rich diversity of the Bay Area.

Registration Has Started for Fall Enrichment Classes

Alameda Education Foundation’s After School Enrichment program offers fun, educational after-school classes. Our programs feature small class sizes and are taught by experts in their fields. Registration for Nea Elementary begins August 11, 2022 at 9:30AM. Alameda Wide and other AUSD schools’ registration will open on August 25, 2022 at 9:30AM.
