AUSD Office of Equity Black History Month celebration

Black History Month Celebration

On Saturday, February 7, 2026,AEF was pleased to host a table at the Alameda Unified School District’s (AUSD) Office of Equity’s celebration of Black History Month.  We had information about Black artists from our Art Changes program as well as handouts about mental health care support via Care Solace. The annual celebration is always so much fun with great activities, displays, speakers and fantastic food! Thank you AEF Board member Renata Westbrooks and all the staff at the Office of Equity for making this event so memorable!

Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month! Also known as American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, this is a time to recognize the history, culture, and contributions of Indigenous people. National Native American Heritage Month was recognized federally for the first time in the United States in 1990. Joaquin Newman, one of our Art Changes local artists, is a member of the Yaqui tribe. Filipino Americans are the second-largest Asian American group in the nation and the third-largest ethnic group in California, after Latinas/os and African Americans. For this month’s Community Voices essay, we [AUSD] asked Renate Westbrooks to write about what Black History Month means to her. Ms. Westbrooks, a longtime educator here in Alameda, currently works as the Focal Scholars Advisor at Ruby Bridges Elementary School.
