Bill’s Word: 2013-2014 Accomplishments

Dear Friend,

Thank you for making impact on thousands of student lives during the last school year through your support of the Alameda Education Foundation (AEF).

You certainly helped Ron.* Ron is an English Language Learner at one of our Alameda high schools. Ron would be the first in his family to attend college. Although he is very bright and capable, he and his mother (who does not speak English) were unaware of the value of a college degree.

Bills Word: Changing Lives, One Student at a Time

Bills Word: Changing Lives, One Student at a Time

Dear Friend,

Recently, I was contacted by a former student. Let’s call her Alisha.  Alisha is a student I knew very well while a principal at Wood Middle School and Encinal High. Let’s just say that when a principal knows a student as well as I knew Alisha, it is not always for good reasons. Alisha spent much of her middle school years just one step away from suspension.  Imagine my delight –

Bill’s Word: Back to School Drive

Bill’s Word: Back to School Drive

Dear Friend,

You may think I am getting ahead of myself from this email’s subject line, but I do mean back to school.  AEF is getting a head start launching

Equipped 4 Success, Alameda’s community wide school supply drive.

Our goal is to support 1,000 homeless, formerly homeless and very low income Kindergarten – 12th grade students with new backpacks and grade-appropriate school supplies that they need to be ready to learn on the first day of school.

Bill’s Word: Thanks for all you do!

Bill’s Word: Thanks for all you do!

Dear Friend,

Salute to Education on April 25th was once again a magical evening.  This is such a special evening that highlights programs and volunteers across Alameda.  I enjoyed seeing old friends again and meeting new ones.  I thank all of you for all you do to support our students.  A special thank you this year to our chair, Pam Riley Chang, who did such a great job that we’ve already recruited her to chair again next year!

Dear Friend,

I would like to cordially invite you to join me on Friday, April 25th from 6:00 – 9:00 pm at Rhythmix Cultural Works, 2513 Blanding Ave., for Salute to Education.  This is AEF’s annual event celebrating public education in Alameda.  Salute to Education honors an innovative program and a selected volunteer from each of Alameda’s 20 K-12 public schools, which are showcased at the event on posters and in a showcase program.

Bill’s Word: Thank You for Supporting Student Success!

Dear Friend,

With the 2012-2013 school year wrapped up (and new year about to begin!), I’m writing to share with you the impact the Alameda Education Foundation made on student success, thanks to your support. Personally, I’ve heard from parents “thrilled” that their children have learned how to design their own video games in our Enrichment computer programming camp. I’ve witnessed the value of our Middle School Sports program’s academic tie-in that, as one parent put it,

Bill’s Word: A Holiday Reflection

Bill’s Word: A Holiday Reflection

Dear Friend,

The tragic event in Newtown occurred the day after our monthly Adopt A Classroom presentation day. I spent Thursday, December 13th with happy, cheering kindergartners and first graders. In fact, look at the picture taken by Kathie Woulfe at one presentation – happy smiling kids – our kids. My last presentation was made outside in the Kindergarten play yard at Haight to cheering Kindergartners. I got many hugs from the beautiful students.

You Can Make a Difference in Students’ Lives

Dear Friend,
I am writing to share a couple powerful stories about what a difference your support of the Alameda Education Foundation makes in students’ lives and to ask you to consider making a year-end financial contribution to support our vital work. You may click here to donate.

When Nathan* made his middle school volleyball team this fall, his coach thought he’d be thrilled. Instead, he turned it down. But the coach took the time to learn why and found out that Nathan struggles with trying anything new and thus had developed a knee-jerk reaction of saying no to everything.
