Bill’s Word: Spring is blooming at the AEF!

Dear Friend,

As we head into Spring, though we could still use rain, I am proud of our many AEF accomplishments so far this school year and of the many upcoming programs ready to bloom.

Just to mention a few:

  • Our Adopt A Classroom goal of 150 teachers receiving a $500 was passed last month with adoptions now totaling 168. That translates into $84,000 into teachers’ hands supporting a myriad of activities.
  • Our girls basketball season ended with exciting championship games, especially the B game with Bay Farm pulling out the victory at the end. The game stands out for excellent play and sportsmanship. The game highlights that we now serve 7 middle school programs with our Middle School Sports program. Seven programs, yet we still only have 3 gyms. Our Athletic Director Marty Garchar is to be complimented for his creativity in scheduling.
  • Our support of academic counseling at the high schools seems to be reaping huge benefits for students and parents alike.
  • Finally, we held our first presentation of College Finances 101 on Saturday at Encinal and look forward to helping students make wise financial decision about college at another presentation this Saturday at the Alameda High Little Theatre.

There is still much to look forward to this spring!

Salute to Education is April 25th, 6 – 9 PM, at Rhythmix Cultural Center. I always look forward to learning about the exciting innovative programs going on in our schools. It is also an opportunity for the community to come together and thank the teachers, administrators and volunteers for all they do. They do really make a difference in students’ lives and we at AEF are passionate about supporting their efforts. Tickets are still just $30 and may be purchased here.

The Track & Field component of our Middle School Sports program begins after spring break. We will be holding four meets this year and the schedule may be found here. Registration for track and field is open now on our website (click the blue “sports” button).

Summer High School classes are back!  AEF is partnering with Las Virgenes Education Foundation to offer acceleration classes for high school students this summer. Registration begins March 24th at www.mylvef.org.

For students of all grade levels, there are many Summer Enrichment Camps to choose from this summer in the arts, academics, science and technology and more. Registration is now open and there is an early bird discount until April 30th. Register by clicking the blue “Enrichment” button in the left column.

I am very pleased to announce that the AEF Board has promoted the very talented AEF Community Outreach Director Vicki Sedlack to Executive Director. The students of AUSD are very fortunate to have Vicki lead the AEF efforts now and in the future.

I think you’ll agree with me that the AEF is making a tremendous impact in the lives of students throughout Alameda. Many of our programs are completely free for students and others are generously supported with scholarships. We could not offer these valuable programs without the generous support of the community. Thank you for helping us Support Student Success!

Sincerely,

Bill Sonneman, President
